It is most famous for the Toshogu, Japan's most lavishly decorated shrine complex and mausoleum of Tokugawa Leyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate. It has been the center of Shinto and Buddhist mountain worship for many centuries. The Shrines and Temples of Nikko date back to the 8th century. In the 1200 years since then, the area has been developed into a complex sanctum for religious followers of Shintoism, Buddhism and the deified Tokugawa family. People used to travel for four days on foot to worship here.
Here we will visit ancient temples, an old Japanese Inn and Hot Springs and we will stay in a traditional Japanese Ryokan. At a ryokan guests can dine on delicious food, relax in comfortable baths, and sleep in the comfort of traditional Japanese-style rooms.

The site of the nation's most Holy of Holies, and boasting some of the world's greatest architectural monuments, Jingu is also home to some of the simplest and most mysterious structures and is regarded as the spiritual home of the Japanese, a place to which most wish to make at least one pilgrimage to in their lives. In fact more than six million pilgrims come to Jingu each year, crossing the Uji Bridge spanning the sacred Isuzu River to symbolically leave behind the temporal world and enter the "pure world" of kami (gods and spirits) and the ancient mythology of the land.
The Grand Shrine of Ise is the spiritual center of all Japanese shrines and is the key element in the faith of the Japanese people. The entrance to the Inner Shrine begins at the Uji Bridge which passes over the sacred Isuzu River. There are two large torii gates at either end of the bridge and it is said that by crossing the bridge, one's mind and heart are purified.
We will do a guided meditation to experience the Japanese spirit of Shinto and Shinto ways of thinking will also be shared. Shinto is an ancient Japanese religion. Starting about 500 BCE (or earlier) it was originally "an amorphous mix of nature worship, fertility cults, divination techniques, hero worship, and shamanism." 4 Its name was derived from the Chinese words "shin tao" ("The Way of the Gods") in the 8th Century. After a full day - back to our lodging for rest and relaxation. Hotel Toba Kowakien 0599-25-3261 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner • Day 8 - Saturday (September 10) Today after breakfast we will go from Ise to the old castle town of Hida Takayama by express train - approximately 5 hours. Hida hotel Plaza 0577-33-4600 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner • Day 9 - Sunday (September 11) After breakfast we will visit Hida Takayama. Surrounded by the tall, snowy mountains of the Japan Alps in northern Gifu Prefecture, Takayam has a history shaped by isolation. In earlier times Takayama was cut off from the outside world by deep winter snows. When visiting Takayama you can enjoy traditional craftsmen while enjoying the feel of this ancient city. Sanmachi Suji are three narrow streets in the center of Takayama's old town. The streets are lined with traditional buildings, stores, sake breweries and private homes. Some of the buildings house museums on folk art, local history and more.
Miso is made and offered for sale on these streets. You'll find a steaming basis of hot miso soup sitting on a stove with a stack of cups nearby. It's self-service and everyone partakes. As a nice alternative to exploring by foot, you can rent a rickshaw which costs about 300 Yen for 2 people.
The Hida Folk Village (Hida no Sato) is an open air museum exhibiting over 30 typical farmhouses and other traditional buildings from the Hida region. The main attractions are a number of gassho-zukuri houses with their steep, thatched roofs. All exhibited buildings are carefully preserved displaying everyday utensils and are open to the public to explore. The buildings' indoor fireplaces are lit every morning making this outdoor open air museum a treat for not only the eyes but also for the nose. Another treat are the morning markets selling flowers and produce from neighboring farms. Later after a full day we will return to our Ryokan for a soothing and restful sleep. Hida hotel Plaza 0577-33-4600 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner • Day 10 - Monday (September 12) Today after breakfast we leave Takayama by Express Train to Nagoya and then on to Kyoto by Sinkansen (the Bullet Train) Kyoto is called "Japan's Heartland" and it is said that it is impossible to know the real Japan without knowing Kyoto. Sanjusangendo is the popular name for Rengeo-in, a temple in eastern Kyoto which is famous for its 1001 status of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. The temple of founded in 1645 and its present structures date from 1266. The main hall, which houses the statues, is, at 100 meters, Japan's longest wooden structure. In its center sits one large Kannon, flanked on each side by 500 smaller statues, standing in neat rows, side by side - each as tall as a human being.
Kiyomizudera (Pure Water Temple) is one of the most celebrated temples in Japan and stands in the wooded hills of eastern Kyoto. You can taste the spring water, which gives the temple its name and which is said to have healing power.
Beyond Kiyomizudera's main hall stands Jishu Shrine - a shrine dedicated to the deity of Love. In front of the shrine are two rocks, placed several meters apart from each other. Walking from one to the other rock with your eyes closed is said to bring luck in your love life. Part of the fun of visiting Kiyomizudera is the approach to the temple along the steep and busy lanes of the Higashiyama district. Except early in the morning, do not expect a tranquil, spiritual atmosphere. The many shops, restaurants and ryokan in the area have been catering to pilgrims for centuries. Products range from local specialties such as Kiyomizu-yaki pottery, sweets and pickles. After a full day - we are back to our lodging. Hotel Fujita Kyoto 075-222-1511 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner • Day 11 - Tuesday (September 13) After breakfast at our Hotel we will transfer to Itami airport in Osaka for our flight to Mt.
